Ironman Chronicles:
Bubble Bath and Tweezers By Lizz Bennett In most situations I have been able to handle stress like a
champ, getting everything done on time, rarely complaining, dealing with the
overwhelming feelings and all-in-all surviving without too much mishap. That is until this last week where it all
finally caught up and I have had to stave off a serious case of insanity. I knew the hardest part of training for the Ironman was
going to be trying to balance the training with motherhood, career and
unexpected life situations-but I am so good at making things just that much
more difficult. A midst all that is going on, we decided to
buy our first house. The last 2 weeks have been boxed away with packing tape
and cardboard. So my training has been intense, but minimal involving a
good run on Monday, a short bike on Tuesday, an hour swim on Wednesday, and 3
solid 6 hour days of cleaning, packing, and carrying boxes up and
downstairs. Saturday was the big move
and it went smoothly! Seriously…without
O.zone workouts I wouldn’t have a prayer completing Ironman and it really helps
to have superfit, freakishly strong friends to make the move quick, easy and
fun! That is until Saturday night when a nagging head cold turned
into a crazy 24 hour flu and left me in bed or hunched over the toilet all day
Sunday. It didn’t help that I was
surrounded by boxes and reminders of things I needed to do along with the
constant guilt of not doing any Ironman specific training most of the
week. 16 hours of sleep later and tons of cold medicine, I felt
about 60% better. It was time to get moving!
I had a house to unpack and a race to train for. So I plowed through the O.Zone workout of the
day and hit a decidedly disappointing tabata on the treadmill, (but it got
done), and headed home to get the bike set-up on the trainer. I had 15 minutes to get it hooked up and then
get a solid 2 hour hill workout in. But by the time I answered the phone and
talked to my mother-in-law, my neighbor, my sister, and my best friend, I only
had an hour before I had to go pick up my kindergartner. I hop on the bike and my chain pops off. By the time I finally get it on and get the
grease of my hands I have 30 min. So of course I stand there contemplating my
situation… Get on the bike and live the rest of the day (like so many
others) where I run around with a hat on and bike shorts just hoping I’m
down-wind from the store clerk and the unlucky friends I might run into or…I
could skip the bike, for now, and take a shower. Tears welling up in my eyes over that
possibility lead me to my decision. I
knew, without a doubt, that if I didn’t shower, shave, and spend some seriously
overdue time on my eyebrows, that come 3:00 this afternoon I would liquefy into
a puddle of hormonal ectoplasm until my family could mop me up, squeeze me into
a bucket, label it “Mom” in red crayon and set me on the counter to witness
their dinner of cold cereal. At least
until I could somehow morph back into a functional human. I walked away from my bike and grabbed my bubble bath and a
pair of tweezers.
