Iron Man Chronicles, by Lizz Bennett

Clarity

I feel the need to clarify certain things.   I am just a girl, a mom of four kids, a wife, and I have a full time job that I love.  I have been an endurance participant for 11 years, a competitor for 3.  This is my first Ironman.  I am not in it to win or to beat anyone else.  I train about half of the time that most athletes do, but I train harder in that time than they do: with weights, against a clock, with hard intervals of intensity that rival a 60 mile bike ride or a fast ½ marathon and I believe it is the best and only way to train.   I don’t have 25-30 hours a week to train, so I take 15 hours and slam specifically programmed, highly intense workouts a week…and it works.

To be perfectly clear, I am a mother of four fantastic kids and they mean more to me than this race.  So if my training takes a toll on my family, I take a step back.  A great workout/bike ride/run means nothing if I have nothing left to give them the rest of the day.  I am perfectly alright skipping a workout, (once in a while), if my family wants to watch a movie, or go to the park.  And there isn’t anyway I would be doing this race without the support of my husband.  He’s an endurance athlete of a different caliber, and he isn’t getting a t-shirt or a medal, or any public recognition, he is doing it because he believes in me,

Just to be clear I don’t know my lactate threshold or my VO2 max and I don’t think I need too.  Because I know when I am working hard and when I’m not.  I know when it hurts and when it doesn’t.  And I know that pain and hard work have to happen together.  I don’t have a high-end, custom-built, top-of-the-line bike.  I have a fairly good bike that is now worth ½ of what I paid for it and I spend about $500+ a year maintaining it. It’s old, it needs more work, but it doesn’t matter because bikes don’t pedal themselves and that is the bike that I will pedal.

I’m not doing the Ironman so that I can tell people I did it. I registered because I love what I do and I thought it would be fun. I am doing it because I don’t believe in going from the cradle to the grave without a little bit of a challenge.  I don’t believe in limits and I don’t believe achievement happens in the absence of sacrifice, fear, pain or doubt.  And that is what I am trying to beat, that is my end-game, that is the race I am racing, that is what the finish line means to me.  Some people register for races to find out who they are.  I know who I am and that is why I am confident in reaching the finish line, I don’t care about how long it takes me, because it’s my race. And to be perfectly clear-I’m not doing this race for you.

That's my husband in the background of this picture. Random! What race is this? I would guess it's the Syracuse half, unless he came to watch you race one time! :)

There isn't anyone more awesome than Meg!!!!

Lindsay - Left arm, 15,18,20,20. Right Arm 15,20,25,30. When i first did this workout 2 months ago, i could barely do 15lbs.

Adam - two rounds of 35, 1 round @ 44, 1 round @ 53, and one rep of the big pappa on each side. (all reps with kettle bells) When i did this the first time i thought the workout was great but did not do weights this heavy and avoided the kettle bells. I think the improvement is awesome

10,15,20,25,30 R&L

90 (R&L)

Did 4 rounds of 10 PC&J @ 80 lbs., as to not re-injure my shoulder. LOVE Tuesdays!

20,25,30,35 R&L

12, 15, 12 15

All at 20 (first time been able to get more than a couple of reps with 20).

30, 40, 45, 50 (only 1 each hand)

Tried to keep reps continuous.

We had a lot of newbies this morning!

Kenzie- Trippy!!! Yeah- the Syracuse 1/2 marathon. Cool! Did you race that one?

20, 25, 30, 35

I believe I have never perspired so much moving so little in my life! DB weights UNO - 35, 40, 45 (1x each with a barbell), 50 (2x each hand the balance 40). Getting better at these but it is still a balance and flexibility issue.

Right - 25, 30, 35, 40
Left - 25, 25, 30, 35

25, 30, 35, 40 (on right).

20, 25, 25, 25 R&L. I think i could of done a little more but didnt push too hard(dont want to hurt my back again)

25, 30 , 25, 25

Lizz - You have always impressed me with your will power to go after the Ironman and you inspire me to work harder.
Today I just tried to keep up with Troy!!

Round 1- 20x5
Round 2- 25x3, 30x2
Round 3- 35x3, 40x2
Round 4- 45x5

So happy with this, last time my max was R-35 and L-30. Lots better, however the last two on each hand, especially the left, were rough! My arms are dead!

But Lizz, your bike looks cool. That's got to count for something.
1 round 45# BB
3 rounds 65# BB

Lizz, great article! I think it's awesome and impressive that with all you have going on your focus is so clear and you still know what's most important! How many athletes training for an Ironman would skip a workout to watch a movie or go to the park with their family?

Dave, You are such a LIAR!! It's not called keeping up when you're lifting WAY more than me!

50, 60, 70, 80 one time - new PR

Lemon, love your sense of priorities. Brian, bikes are like women's shoes--as we get older, comfort matters a lot more than looks. If you want looks, you can borrow my three-speed cruiser with the cute white flowers--but it doesn't go very fast! (about like I "run")

OH Man- I love Turkish get ups!!! This week has sucked!!! The next week is going to suck too!!! I miss you OZONE!!

25-30-35-40-45/50

25 Right hand, 20 left hand. I have issues with these I couldn't get very heavy.
